Zu it. mille »tausend«, das auf das lat. Zahlwort mille (vgl. ↑ Meile) zurückgeht, stellt sich das mit Vergrößerungssuffix gebildete it. milione »Großtausend«. In dieser Bedeutung gelangte das it. Wort seit dem 13. Jh. in die anderen europäischen Sprachen. In dt. Texten erscheint das Wort (spätmhd. milion) im 15. Jh., gleichfalls ohne festen Zahlenwert, im Allgemeinen nur zur Bezeichnung von sehr großen Summen im Geldverkehr. Zum allgemein geläufigen Zahlwort mit dem festen Zahlenwert »1 000 000« (= 1 000 × 1 000) wurde es erst im 17. Jh. – Abl.: Millionär »Besitzer von Millionen‹werten›; schwerreicher Mann« (18. Jh.; aus gleichbed. frz. millionnaire); Milliarde »1 000
Millionen« (18. Jh.; aus frz. milliard, das mit Suffixwechsel zu frz. million gebildet ist); Billion »eine Million Millionen« (18. Jh.; aus frz. billion in dessen früherer Bedeutung »eine Milliarde«; das Wort ist eine gelehrte Neubildung zu frz. million mit dem lat.
